Dark Sky Parks
Hovenweep National Monument
San Juan County, UtahBortle 2 Best in Spring, Fall
Truly dark sky, with the zodiacal light clearly visible.
Gold Tier certified, among the darkest designated sites in the National Park System. Protects six prehistoric Ancestral Puebloan villages in a remote canyon setting with almost no artificial light for many miles. Straddles the Utah-Colorado border. A small campground sits adjacent to the main visitor area. The same remoteness that made this a defensible site 800 years ago is what makes it exceptional for dark sky viewing today.
