Cherry Springs State Park
Truly dark sky, with the zodiacal light clearly visible.
The second International Dark Sky Park ever certified in the world and the first in the eastern United States, Cherry Springs sits at 2,300 feet elevation on the Allegheny Plateau surrounded by 262,000 acres of Susquehannock State Forest. The 82-acre Astronomy Field offers a full 360-degree unobstructed horizon, extraordinary by eastern US standards. On optimal nights 10,000 stars are visible to the naked eye and the Milky Way is bright enough to cast a shadow. The park hosts two major annual star parties drawing hundreds of astronomers from across the country.
