Chiricahua National Monument
Truly dark sky, with the zodiacal light clearly visible.
Tucked into the southeastern corner of Arizona near the New Mexico border, Chiricahua sits in an isolated mountain sky island surrounded by low-population desert. The monument is certified by DarkSky International and benefits from its distance from any major city. The rock pinnacle formations that define the landscape during the day create an unusual foreground after dark. The Chiricahua sky island ecosystem is also one of the most biodiverse in North America.
