Dark Sky Parks
Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park
Okeechobee, FloridaBortle 2 Best in Winter
Truly dark sky, with the zodiacal light clearly visible.
Florida's first DarkSky International certified site, Kissimmee Prairie Preserve covers 58,000 acres of flat, treeless dry prairie in central Florida with one of the widest open horizons of any certified dark sky park in the country. The dedicated Astronomy Pad inside the campground has red-light-only restrictions and telescope-friendly ground surfaces. Bortle 2 conditions in Florida are extraordinary given the state's density and development. Visit October through April to avoid summer humidity, insects, and storm activity.
