Dark Sky Parks
Everglades National Park
Homestead, FloridaBortle 2 Best in Winter
Truly dark sky, with the zodiacal light clearly visible.
The largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi River, Everglades National Park occupies the southern tip of Florida with a flat, open horizon in every direction and minimal surrounding development. The park is pursuing DarkSky International certification and already maintains some of the darkest accessible skies in the eastern United States. Winter is the only practical season for stargazing here — visit November through April to avoid the summer heat, humidity, and mosquito activity that makes nighttime outdoor activity nearly impossible.
