Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake, OregonBortle 2 Best in Summer

Truly dark sky, with the zodiacal light clearly visible.

Crater Lake holds the deepest lake in the United States, formed by the collapse of a massive volcano 7,700 years ago. The park sits at 6,500 feet elevation in the southern Oregon Cascades with a certified dark sky designation. The deep blue of the lake reflects stars with unusual clarity on calm, moonless nights. Rim Drive gives access to multiple viewpoints around the lake after dark, and the summer ranger astronomy programs are among the better interpretive programs in the national park system.
