Devils River State Natural Area
Truly dark sky, with the zodiacal light clearly visible.
The first International Dark Sky Sanctuary in Texas and the sixth in the world at the time of its designation in 2019. Bortle 2. The park protects 37,000 acres of remote canyon and river country in southwest Texas, surrounding the Devils River, one of the clearest and most pristine waterways in the state. Access is limited and the roads require high-clearance vehicles. A limited number of camping permits are issued each day to maintain the wilderness character of the area. The combination of true wilderness, a pristine river, and Bortle 2 skies makes this one of the most distinctive dark sky destinations in Texas.
