Caprock Canyons State Park
Truly dark sky, with the zodiacal light clearly visible.
Certified in January 2026, the newest International Dark Sky Park in Texas. Bortle 2. Sits on the edge of the Llano Estacado in the Texas Panhandle near Quitaque, where the flat caprock breaks away into dramatic red canyon country. The canyon walls and the remote Panhandle location combine to produce skies that rival anything in far West Texas. The park is home to the official Texas State Bison Herd, which makes for an unusual combination of wildlife viewing and stargazing. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons. Summer heat can be intense and Panhandle winters are cold and windy.
