Black Gap Wildlife Management Area
Pristine sky, where the Milky Way casts shadows on the ground.
A certified International Dark Sky Sanctuary covering roughly 103,000 acres on the southern border of Big Bend National Park. Bortle 1, with SQM readings of 21.73 recorded at Campsite 14. Sanctuaries represent the rarest and most pristine dark sky designations awarded by DarkSky International. Managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife as a wildlife management area, access requires a Limited Public Use permit. The remoteness and access requirements keep crowds minimal, making it one of the quietest and darkest sky watching destinations in the United States for those willing to plan ahead.
