Big Bend Ranch State Park
Pristine sky, where the Milky Way casts shadows on the ground.
Texas's largest state park at over 300,000 acres and one of the darkest certified sites in the country. Bortle 1, with a mean SQM reading of 21.73 recorded across the park. Sits directly west of Big Bend National Park in the same Trans-Pecos darkness corridor, making the two parks together the most extensive dark sky destination in the continental United States. Most roads require high-clearance vehicles. The reward for the effort is complete isolation under some of the darkest skies accessible by road anywhere in North America. The Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve, the largest certified dark sky reserve in the world, encompasses both this park and Big Bend National Park.
