Grand Teton National Park — Bortle 3
Grand Teton sits within Teton County, the world's first county-wide International Dark Sky Community. The Teton Range rising sharply above the Jackson Hole valley creates one of the most dramatic foregrounds of any dark sky site in the country. The peaks gain 7,000 feet from the valley floor in just a few miles, and that wall of granite against a dark sky is something photographs consistently underrepresent. The Snake River winding through the valley reflects stars on calm nights. At Bortle 3 the conditions are excellent, and the combination of iconic mountain scenery and county-wide dark sky protections makes this one of the most visited stargazing destinations in the West.
Sinks Canyon State Park — Bortle 2
Sinks Canyon sits in the Wind River Range foothills west of Lander, Wyoming, with a certified dark sky designation and darker conditions than its more famous neighbor to the north. The canyon takes its name from the Popo Agie River, which disappears into a limestone cave at the bottom of the canyon and reappears downstream. The narrow canyon walls block horizon glow from most directions, and the surrounding Wind River Range has minimal development for miles. It is one of the better kept secrets in Wyoming stargazing.
Jackson Hole Airport — Bortle 3
Jackson Hole Airport holds the distinction of being the world's first certified International Dark Sky Airport, recognized for its commitment to dark sky lighting standards. It sits inside Grand Teton National Park, the only commercial airport in the country located within a national park boundary. The certification reflects the broader Teton County commitment to protecting night sky quality across the entire valley. It is a small distinction that says something larger about what a place values.
Planning Your Trip
The Jackson Hole valley is accessible year-round, but the prime stargazing season runs June through October before early winter weather arrives in the Tetons. Summer nights are cool even in July, dropping into the 40s after midnight at valley elevation. The park campgrounds fill fast in peak season, so book early or plan to arrive midweek. For Sinks Canyon, Lander is the nearest town and makes a good base. The Wind River Range surrounding Lander has some of the best backcountry in the Rockies if you want to extend the trip.
